Church School

Welcome! Located in St. Louis, in the close-in suburb of Clayton, we are a parish made alive in Christ and celebrating this life through the Anglican liturgy and sacraments with vibrant preaching and teaching, and beautiful, traditional music. Ours is a welcoming community and we're extremely family-friendly.

The parish family is a lively mix of lifelong Episcopalians and members raised in a number of other denominations and religious traditions. We hope that if you haven't done so already, you'll join us soon!

CLASS PROGRAMS

The curriculum for the children at The Church of St. Michael & St. George, preschool through 5th grade, is based on our shared church experience as the family of God. Each grade concentrates on age-appropriate themes. All of the children’s programs include art, music and outreach projects that support each class curriculum.

Pre-schoolers (two, three and four year olds) approach church school as “Godly play” with time for play, snacks, music and learning about God in their life through Bible stories and art projects.

Pre-Kindergarten Class (four year olds turning five) learn about baptism and how water is present throughout the Bible.

Kindergarten children concentrate on the sacrament of the Eucharist.

First graders learn Bible stories in both the Old and New Testaments.

Second graders learn about the Old Testament.

Third graders learn about the New Testament.

Fourth and fifth graders are divided into separate groups of boys and girls.  Using the “Witness” curriculum, they learn more about the Old and New Testaments in a way that relates directly to their lives. All will participate in an outreach project once a month.

CHILDREN’S LITURGIES

There are two age-appropriate liturgies for the children held in St. George’s Chapel and led by the chapel leaders. The 9:15 am service is for the first through third grades. Fourth and fifth graders have the option of attending the church liturgy or the chapel liturgy, since both services end at approximately the same time. The children participate in the service by leading the Prayers of the People, reading the Old Testament scripture, presenting the communion elements and serving as acolytes and ushers.

At the 10:25 am liturgy, lay leaders guide the preschool-kindergarten children (2-6 year olds) through a special age-appropriate children’s Eucharist, also in St. George’s Chapel.

FAMILY NIGHTS AND EVENTS

There are several Family events and activities throughout the year, including All Hallows Eve and Advent Family Nights, a brunch with Saint Nicholas, Epiphany Family Night, and the parish picnic in May. Other fun family events, such as a hayride or a family movie night, are scattered throughout the year.

VOLUNTEERS

There are many opportunities for people to become involved in our church school program including volunteer teaching.  And the church school program simply would not be possible without the support of the church school Steering Committee, which assists in planning and guiding programs and events throughout the year. High school students have the opportunity to assist the preschool through third grade teachers.
