Christian Formation
It’s been said that the Episcopal Church is “come as you are.” That is true, but it is not a “stay as you are” church. The deepening of our lives in Christ implies an ongoing transformation. This transformation can happen in everything we do, including worship, prayer, study, and service. The courses listed below will assist you as you continue your journey. The sessions are designed to be E.P.I.C. (Experiential, Participatory, Image-rich, and Connective) and minister to the whole person, Body, Mind and Spirit. There are no pre-requisites for any course.
Simply Christian: Evangelism for the Reluctant
After Easter this spring, starting on April 9th, St. Michael's will begin a new, 8-week formation course entitled, Simply Christian: Evangelism for the Reluctant. This course will utilize Bishop N.T. Wright's wonderful book, Simply Christian, as well as video instruction from Bishop Wright, prayer, discussion, role-playing, and addressing those fears that make you an unprepared or reluctant evangelist. The course will be facilitated by The Rev. Michael Blewett.
Materials needed: a copy of N.T. Wright's book, Simply Christian: Why Christianity Makes Sense, available in our bookstore or online.
a copy of the Simply Christian participants' guide, which will be available at the church bookstore soon.
The format of the evening will be similar to courses in the past, with dinner at 6 p.m. ($8), followed by instruction and "lab work" at 6:45 p.m. Please contact the church office to reserve a place soon, as the class number will be kept small (around 20) in order to facilitate individual work.
There will be some reading and preparation during the weeks before each session, with additionial materials posted online when necessary. Sessions topics will include, but are not limited to:
Introduction (you will complete this on your own before the April 9th)
Session 1 - (April 9th) - Restlessness & Spiritual Hunger
Session 2 - (April 16th) - Connection & Beauty
Session 3 - (April 23rd) - God & The Chosen People
Session 4 - (April 30th) - Jesus
Session 5 - (May 7th) - The Holy Spirit
Session 6 - (May 14th) - Prayer & Worship
Session 7 - (May 21st) - Scripture
Session 8 - (May 28th) - The Church and New Creation
Nursery care will be provided if needed.
