Ministry Information

Hunger Ministry

OutreachAlice Dames, Chair
There are many ways in which the Hunger Ministry serves those in need. The Give-a-Meal-a-Month (GAMAM) program collects non-perishable food items which are distributed on a monthly basis to local food pantries -- Ascension, Trinity, and All Saints. Volunteers can also make casseroles to feed a family once a month. Look for the yellow GAMAM collection list and bags as well as casserole of the month recipe cards by the receptionist's desk. In addition to these monthly collections, we hold bi-annual campaigns in the spring and fall. The Sandwich Brigade gathers on the third Saturday of every month to make sandwiches for the homeless in St. Louis as part of the Christian Service Center's Operation Brown Bag program. All financial contributions made to St. Michael's Hunger ministry are used to make our quarterly donations to the food pantries and Task Force for the Hungry.

KIDS in Detention/Episcopal City Mission

Penny James, Chair
For the past nine years, volunteers have hosted monthly birthday parties at the Juvenile Detention Center. By interacting with the youth, we assist them in educational, social and spiritual development of the youth. Volunteers can become involved in planning the parties or with the programs and entertainment. Parties are held on the second Friday of every month from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Tutors are always needed as well. Volunteers require a background check.

Shelter Ministry

Bill Wallace, Chair
Step into the shattered lives of those who have "no place to rest their heads"
The mission of the Shelter Ministry is to provide assistance to families and individuals in need of emergency shelter. The primary hands on activity of the ministry is providing breakfast to the residents of the Christian Service Center (on 19th and Cole Streets) every Sunday morning. This includes purchasing supplies, setting up the dining room, preparing and serving the breakfast and cleaning up. We typically serve 60-90 residents a week. Participation on Sundays does not require advance notice. Simply show up and help out. Weekday volunteer opportunities with mothers and children are also available. We solicit volunteer time, donated goods and services and monetary contributions.

St. Michael's Houses

OutreachJim Stephenson, Chair
Our mission has remained the same since our beginning in 1984: to provide equity funding for low-income persons in critical need of housing. St. Michael's Houses encourages the gift of tributes in honor or memory of family members, friends or loved ones. Opportunities also exist in other ways: work on a Habitat for Humanity house, or donate appliances, furniture and clothing to an agency's warehouse. St. Michael's Houses is proud to partner with agencies such as: Beyond Housing, Doorways, Habitat for Humanity, Lydia's House and Places for People. The need is great - the importance of this mission can be measured by the many men, women and children who tonight are sleeping in a home of their own because of donations to St. Michael's Houses.

World Service Mission Ministry

Building relationships, building hope in Nicaragua
The St. Michael & St. George Nicaragua effort seeks to support the work of Nour and Carolyn Sirker, two missionaries in Managua. Our mission brings the good news of Christ's love to the poor of Nicaragua, as well as desperately needed medical services and basic education supplies. For the past eight years, our missioners have truly made a difference in the lives of others, as well as participating in a fascinating cultural experience. During the year, we raise funds, collect clothing, supplies and medications to carry in our "second suitcases" on our trip in August. While in Managua, we work on construction of the Sirker's hospital, distribute items at local hospitals and work with the children in the Sirker's school. We also solicit sponsorship for the education of children who would otherwise be denied a chance to improve their circumstances.
