The World Service Mission carries on a longstanding tradition at The Church of St. Michael & St. George of providing hands-on Christian outreach in places outside the United States. For more than ten years, our focus has been on annual mission trips to Managua, Nicaragua, the second poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere.
In late July, a group of missioners ranging in age from 16 and over and dubbed “the Nicas,” depart for Managua. There, they spend a week and, in some cases two weeks, supporting the work of ‘Fundacion el Samaritano’ which operates two K-9 grade schools. There is plenty of hands-on work to do, but also a lot of fun to be had in beautiful Nicaragua.
The missioners are always accompanied by a member of the clergy, and the mission trips are a wonderful and welcome opportunity for spiritual growth, as well as making a difference in a country that desperately needs our help.
Each year, the number of missioners numbers 25 to 30. The missioners are supported in their journeys by several dozen non-traveling Nicas. They spend the year gathering school supplies, medications, layettes, hand-sewn children’s clothing and other items for the traveling Nicas to carry with them on journeys.
