Canterbury Bookstore

Don’t forget Confirmation May 18. Gift ideas abound at Canterbury Bookstore. Prayer books, Bibles and devotionals are in stock and can be special ordered, too. Gold imprinting available on any book.

While counting and cataloging our recent inventory, many items from James Avery were discovered. Over the next few weeks these items will be available at a 50% markdown. Stupp Scholarship

It’s time for interested graduating high school seniors from this parish to apply for a Jane Howell Stupp Living Memorial Scholarship for college for the 2008-2009 academic year. This fund was established by Mrs. Stupp’s family to provide one-time only college scholarships to worthy recipients. This is a competitive scholarship and not all applicants may receive a scholarship. You need to make a written application for this grant by writing the rector and including a transcript, a list of all financial support you are receiving and two letters of reference, one of which must be written by a teacher. Your information must be received in the rector’s office by Monday, June 2, 2008.

Evensong at St. Louis Abbey

Sunday, May 18 at 5:00 p.m.; St. Louis Abbey, 500 S. Mason Road 63141

The Choir of The Church of St. Michael and St. George will sing Evensong for Trinity Sunday in the glorious acoustics of the Abbey Church of St. Louis at the invitation of the Abbot. The monks of St. Louis Abbey sang Solemn Vespers here at CSMSG back on March 2 and the church was filled to capacity for this very special service. Please plan to attend this beautiful service of Choral Evensong as we continue our ongoing ecumenical relationship with the Abbey.

Adult Confirmation & Reception Event

If you have recently (or even not-so-recently) come into the Episcopal Church and would like to be confirmed (if you have not yet been) or received (have already been confirmed in another denomination), please mark Saturday, May 17 (new date) on your calendars. On that day, we will hold our 3rd annual All-Day Confirmation Advance (like a “retreat”, only we don’t go away!). Confirmation will be on Sunday, May 18 at the 9:15 a.m. Eucharist here at St. Michael & St. George. Please contact the church office (heidi@csmsg.org or 314.721.1502) to let us know you are coming.

Give-A-Meal-A-Month

The menu for May is: beef ravioli, mixed vegetables, mixed fruit/fruit cocktail, Martha White BixMix (needs water only), dry milk (envelope variety) – optional. Soap, laundry or dish detergent, toilet paper, tissues and paper towels would also be welcome. Pick up a yellow bag near the receptionist’s desk, fill the bag with this month’s items and return it to the church.

Habitat for Humanity

St. Michael’s Houses will again be participating in the Episcopal Habitat for Humanity Project. We are looking for all types of volunteers age 16 or older to work at the site. Most volunteers have little or no building experience. Volunteers perform important work both on and off the site. The building often is done in very hot weather and people are needed to hand out water, wet towels, clean up the work site and make sure that safety rules are followed. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Michael Burke, who coordinates the St. Michael’s Houses volunteer effort.

Shelter Ministry at Gateway Homeless Services

Whatever your talents, there is a volunteer opportunity for you at Gateway Homeless Services. You can teach children to cook or sew, organize a Walk-a-Thon, enter case files in the computer, answer phones, stock shelves with canned goods, tutor adults for GED testing, organize arts and crafts projects for children or assist with homework. The opportunities abound and the need is staggering. Call Bill Wallace or Peggy Strelinger, 314.721.1502, to discuss how you can participate.

KIDs/ECM

The birthday party for the kids at the Juvenile Detention Center was a great success last month. The next birthday party will be August 8. Volunteers can help with purchasing supplies for the party, decorating the room before the event or assisting with the program for the evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Please call Penny James or Peggy Strelinger, 314.721.1502, for more information. Application must be made to participate in this ministry, so please plan early.

Sunday 8:00 a.m. Greeters

Help extend the hospitality of The Church of St. Michael & St. George and become a greeter at the 8:00 a.m. liturgy. Contact Patricia Johnson before or after the liturgy, or call her at home.

Knitting Ministry

The St. Michael’s Knitting Ministry is five years old. Its mission is to offer tangible and spiritual love, comfort and prayers to fellow parishioners and friends through knitted objects - Mantles of Comfort, Baby Blankets of Love and Chemo Caps. Currently there are 55 knitters, and we have knitted and given away 185 mantles, 70 baby blankets and 10 chemo caps. Canterbury Bookstore has kits for the knitted objects and Resource Booklets about St. Michael’s Knitting Ministry. Prayerful knitting nurtures the knitters as well as the recipients of the knitted objects. Experienced knitters are welcome, as well as those who are new to such practice. Contact Nicki Gillis at the church if you are interested in joining the Knitting Ministry.

Help Fill a Second Suitcase for Nicaragua

By packing a suitcase, you can be part of the mission trip from St. Michael’s going to Nicaragua in July. Each volunteer takes a second suitcase of donated items needed by two Christian schools, two medical clinics and a hospital which serves the poorest communities in Managua. Even basic items, such as layettes (infant items wrapped in a cloth diaper) are needed. Recipe for layette: 2 cloth diapers, 2 diaper pins, 1 large onesie (infant shirt), 1 small onesie, 1 infant toy, and toiletries (travel sized shampoos/lotions, toothpaste, etc.) are needed and greatly appreciated. Items needed also include new or gently used clothing (summer weight only) for adults and children, underwear (children’s sizes 4-16) and adult sizes (for teenagers), white socks for girls and dark socks for boys (ages 4-17), infant toys, small toys, barrettes/hair ribbons, school supplies, sticker books, puzzles, games, children’s vitamins, pre-natal vitamins, Gatorade in powder form, Neosporin ointment, cough syrups. Donation boxes are located under the coat racks at the Wydown entrance (near the Bookstore).

Do You Sew?

The WSMM Ministry is seeking volunteers to help sew shorts and sundresses for children in Nicaragua. The shorts and dresses will go to the Nejapa School in Nicaragua with mission volunteers next summer. The pattern and material are provided. Donations of material are welcomed! Contact Carol Moppins for more information.

Hunger Ministry Needs Food

Please help fill the increasing need for canned and packaged food in the St. Louis Food Pantries. Any varieties of canned and dried foods are greatly needed. Soap, laundry or dish detergent, toilet paper, tissues and paper towels would also be welcome. During the holiday season the need is especially great. The recent closings of some shelters and pantries will put an increased demand on those currently open. Pick up a yellow bag near the receptionist’s desk, fill the bag with this month’s items and return it to the church or bring your donation in any box or bag. Can you help in other ways? Contact Alice Dames with your ideas.

Cell Phones Needed

If you own an old cell phone that you no longer use, you could provide a much-needed “safety net” to a victim of domestic violence. Old cell phones are being collected and refurbished to provide women at risk with a secure phone to make “911” calls in the event of a domestic emergency. Phones (no accessories please) are being collected in the Bookstore. Call Peggy Strelinger, 721.1502, for more information.

Casseroles ‘R’ Us

Did you know that one casserole feeds a family of four for two days? Pick up a casserole pan and lid with the recipe near the church receptionist’s desk, make the casserole and return it to the church freezer. Put a group together and come to church and assemble the casseroles. Call Alice Dames or Peggy Strelinger 314.721.1502 for details. Casseroles are delivered to local food pantries to be distributed to families in need.

Friday Morning Women’s Bible Study

All women are invited on Fridays from 7:30-8:15 a.m. in the Sverdrup Room, studying the Book of Genesis.

Heavenly Meals

This ministry, formerly known as the Crisis Response Ministry, provides meals to parishioners who are in the midst of challenging times –– the birth of a new baby, a health crisis, a move, or the loss of a loved one. Volunteers cook and deliver full meals (usually dinners) to the families in need. If you would like to be a part of this ministry, contact Marian Clifford. If your family is in need of some ‘Heavenly Meals,’ contact the church or call Marian.
