About St. George, Martyr
Feast Day - April 23
The earliest accounts suggest that George was a soldier under the Roman Emperor, Diocletian (c. 300 A.D.) who was beheaded after his conversion to Christianity. Subsequent legends tell how he slew a dragon that had been oppressing a kingdom, and rescued the princess who was to have been sacrificed to the monster. Dragons symbolize the forces of evil (see St. Michael).
St. George's feast day is celebrated on April 23 in the calendar of the Church of England and certain other calendars of saints. In 1344, The Order of St. George-better known as The Order of the Garter-was founded in England. The saint's banner had been carried into battle before English troops even before that date. St. George is the patron of soldiers and of chivalry. He is revered in many European churches as a champion of the oppressed because he was a knight willing to sacrifice himself for Christ to overcome evil.
