About St. Michael, Archangel
Feast Day - September 29
Michael is the leader of the archangels (the others mentioned in Scripture are Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel). The word "angel" means "messenger," and angels are believed to be heavenly beings who carry God's messages to earth, as did the angel who appeared to the shepherds in The Gospel of St. Luke, bringing them "good tidings of great joy" that a savior had been born. Michael's name means "Who is like God?" He is mentioned five times in the Bible, most notably in Revelation 12: "And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent called the Devil and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world." The Bible also tells us that Michael protected the people of Israel (Daniel). In art, he is often portrayed wearing armor, with a sword or spear, often in the act of defeating Satan. Michael is also sometimes shown with a pair of scales, weighing souls on Judgment Day.
The Feast of St. Michael and All Angels is celebrated in the Book of Common Prayer on September 29. In England, "Michaelmas" (as it is called) is one of the "quarter days" on which magistrates are appointed, rents are paid, and the Autumn school term begins. In ancient prayers, St. Michael is invoked as "our defender" against wickedness because he cast Satan out of heaven.
Collect for The Feast of St. Michael and All Angels
O everlasting God, who hast ordained and constituted the ministries of angels and men in a wonderful order: Mercifully grant that, as thy holy angels always serve and worship thee in heaven, so by thy appointment they may help and defend us on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
