Registration

Registration Sunday is September 9. Church School starts at 9:30 a.m. that morning for Preschool I – 5th Grades, giving parents the opportunity to visit the Lay Ministry Fair as well as meet their children’s teachers in their classrooms before the 10:00 a.m. service. The Preschool – 5th grade children will join their parents in church at the time of the offertory, just like during the summer. The regular 9:15 a.m. Church School schedule begins on September 16.

Church School Program

The Church School program for Preschool I - 5th Grade resumes on September 10 with registration in the Great Hall. Although the service doesn't begin until 10:00 a.m., the parents and children may go to their classrooms as early at 9:30 a.m. to meet their teachers. The children will join their parents in church during the time of the announcements, like the summer schedule. The fall kick-off follows in the playground area on the Wydown side of the church.

The 9:15 a.m. program begins the following week, September 17.

Summer Church School Schedule

During the summer 10:00 service, the Preschool - 3rd grade children are invited to hear the homily and to do a lectionary-based activity in St. Cecillia's Room (upstairs). At the time of the announcements, the children will join their families in the church for the Eucharist service.

Class Programs

The curriculum for the children at SMSG, Preschool through 5th Grade, is based on their church experience as a Family of God. Each grade concentrates on age-appropriate themes. All of the children's programs include art, music, and outreach projects that support each class' curriculum.

Pre-schoolers (2, 3 and 4 year olds) approach Church School as Godly Play, with time for play, snacks, music and learning about God in their life through Bible stories and art projects.

Pre-Kindergarten Class (4-year olds turning 5), learn about baptism and how "water" is present throughout the Bible.

Kindergarten children concentrate on the sacrament of the Eucharist.

1st Graders learn Bible stories in both the Old and New Testament.

2nd Graders learn about the Old Testament and the Third Grade class learns about the New Testament.

4th and 5th graders are divided into two groups: 4/5th grade girls and 4/5th grade boys, and, using the curriculum, Witness. learn more about the Old and New Testaments in a way that relates to their lives. They will participate in an outreach project once a month.

Children's Services

There are two age-appropriate services for the children, held in St. George's Chapel and led by the Rev. Heather Blewett.* At the 9:15 a.m. service, the 2nd - 5th graders participate by leading the Prayers of the People, reading the Old Testament scripture, presenting the communion elements, and serving as acolytes and ushers. At the 10:25 a.m. service, the Rev. Heather Blewett leads a special age-appropriate Children's Eucharist for the Preschool-1st grade children, also in St. George's Chapel.

*On the first Sunday of each month, the 2nd - 5th grade children attend a family service with their parents in the church (9:15 a.m. service).

Family Nights and Events

There are several Family events and activities throughout the year, including the All Hallows Eve and Advent Family Nights, a Brunch with Saint Nicholas, Epiphany Family Night, and the Parish Picnic in May. Other fun family events, such as a hayride or a family movie night, are scattered throughout the year also.

Volunteers

There are many opportunities for people to become involved in the Church School program. In addition to the volunteer teachers, the Church School program would not be possible without the support of the Church School Steering Committee, which assists in the events throughout the year. High School students also have the opportunity to assist the teachers for the Preschool-3rd grade teachers.
